The interiors of contemporary Philippine houses are often accented with selected Western furnishing and "branded" set pieces by the likes of Michael Graves or Philippe Starck. It is the heterotopic nature of modern Filipino design that actually provides a more layered reading and enjoyment of the spaces provided—compared to singular themes in Western interiors. The overall look and mood, despite these imports, is unmistakably tropical modern, pointing to another distinctive feature of Philippine houses: an eclectic design flexibility that allows references to Western art and objects without losing local stylistic identity.

The 1000-square meter property stands high on a rugged cliff, exposed to both tropical storms and fierce winds. Regardless, Calma chose to build the cubist house in glass and concrete. Four rectilinear "portals" soar up to the sky, while three terraces are cantilevered toward the sea. Picture glass curtain walls open all the main rooms to the ocean side of the house. There, horizontal white railings "float" to barely outline the tiled terraces, or rise to "frame" private views of the seamless ocean.

All interior walls are painted white to visually expand the space as well as to highlight the owners' fine collection of art. The art gallery in the foyer displays a stone sculpture by Impy Pilapil and an abstract painting by Gus Albor. The front elevation (top), longitudinal section (center), and ground floor plan (below) of the Tengco townhouse. A fully glassed wall conjures an immense spatial illusion. The staircase up to the third-level attic is also a sculptural work: "see-through" accordion steps ascend the structural wall with voids in place of risers.
